My kids absolutely love the IDEA of candy canes, but when it comes to eating them they’re not actually that fussed! So this year we wanted to try making some fun candy cane inspired playdough as an alternative!

This Candy cane Christmas Scented Playdough recipe looks and smells super Christmassy! Using Peppermint extract and iridescent glitter you can make a great playdough activity for your toddler at home this Christmas!

Experimenting with playdough scents is a lot of fun, so if you’re looking for some other festive scented playdough recipe ideas stay to the end!

This Christmas scented playdough recipe is super easy to make at home with just two different colours – you could even jazz up some shop bought playdough if you don’t have the time to make it from scratch (it is super quick though and much cheaper!)

Peppermint Candy Cane Playdough Ingredients

This recipe requires you to make the playdough in a saucepan on the hob – I know a lot of people search for ‘no cook’ playdough recipes, but I always find that this is a much quicker and easier way!

What you’ll need:

  • 150g Flour (approx 1 Cup)
  • 150g Salt (approx 1/2 Cup)
  • 200ml Water
  • 1 Tsp Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Tsp Cream of Tartar
  • Red & White Food Colouring
  • Iridescent Glitter
  • Peppermint Flavouring/Extract

As always there are always alternatives if you don’t have everything you need!(The glitter just adds a nice sparkle so it isn’t necessary, and you can use any colour you want!)(The peppermint is lovely but you could replace with some ground ginger for another great festive scent!)(I used white food colouring to make the dough extra white but you can simply leave the dough as it is)

How to Make Candy Cane Scented Playdough

  • Measure out all the ingredients that you will need and add to your saucepan
(I like to weigh everything out straight into the saucepan so there’s only one thing to wash up!)
  • Add your white or red food colouring depending on which batch you are making first
(This recipe can either be duplicated one for each colour if you want to make a lot of playdough for multiple children or you can make it up and half the mixture before colouring)
  • Add iridescent glitter or a festive colour of choice
(This is easier if done in the pan before cooking – if using iridescent glitter you can simply halve the mixture to colour afterwards)
  • Cook the playdough on a low heat whilst constantly stirring
(the dough will start to get thicker and more dough like as you stir. Once you are able to touch the playdough without your hands getting sticky, it is done – be careful it will be hot!)
  • Take out of the pan and knead, then leave to cool
(Once it is not hot to touch I tend to put it in the fridge to firm up)
  • Get your playdough out, and if needed, either add flour if too sticky, or add a little oil if too dry
(Homemade playdough is easy to fix in this way and will keep for a long time in a sealed container or bag)

Christmas Playdough Activities

Once your playdough is made it really is entirely up to your little one how to get stuck in!

Here are some ideas of what you could do:

  • Have fun mixing the playdough together and make some lovely swirly patterns
  • Have a go at making your own candy canes by rolling two long strands and twisting them together to create the iconic red and white stripe
  • Alternatively roll small balls and assemble in alternate colours and then roll over to create a flat candy cane pattern
  • Use cutters, or pieces of real candy cane and make some candy cane cookies for play
  • Use your imagination and go for it!

Christmas Playdough Alternatives

Another great playdough for Christmas time, and all year round, is gingerbread playdough! We had a go at making some earlier in the year as part of a story-time Tuff Tray – you can check it out HERE

You could also add some green playdough to the white and red for some festive Christmas tree playdough!
